Industry best practice

Options to help support INS recommendations

With an ANTT insertion method, different kit configurations and added length* PowerGlide™ Pro and PowerGlide™ ST Midline Catheters provide options to achieve best practice and industry guidelines for reducing the risk of catheter failure and contamination.

These midline catheters are designed to support INS recommendations.

  • At least 2/3s of the peripheral catheter should reside within the vessel to reduce the risk of failure.1
  • Use a sterile single-use gel packet and a sterile sheath over the probe and disinfect before and after each use to reduce the risk for ultrasound probe contamination and subsequently risk for infection.1

Advancing blood collection

Designed specifically for blood draws

Venipuncture for blood draws is one of the most performed procedures in hospitals, affecting nearly every inpatient daily.2 Choosing the right midline catheter to successfully provide treatment and blood sampling has been shown to lower the burden of blood draws for both hospitals and patients.3

This is why BD offers the PowerGlide Pro™ Midline Catheter—to help you and your team simplify insertions similar to peripheral IV catheters, with flexible placement in the lower or upper arm and catheter dwell time up to 29 days.

Reinforced tip

Designed to maintain a consistent aspiration flow rate

The reinforced tip of the PowerGlide Pro™ and PowerGlide™ ST Midline Catheters is designed to improve and maintain a consistent aspiration flow rate, without catheter collapse.*

*Compared to the similar non-reinforced tip catheters. All data on file at BD. Bench test results may not be predictive of actual clinical performance.

Reinforced tip

Designed to help overcome distal catheter tip collapse with retrograde flow during blood sampling.

Power injectable

Designed for power injection

Both PowerGlide Pro™ and PowerGlide™ ST Midline Catheters are power injectable. See each product's detail page for more information.

BD Instaflash™ Needle Technology

Can confirm immediate vessel entry at the point of insertion to improve first-stick success, potentially reducing painful hit-and-miss insertions

Passive safety mechanism

Activates when needle is removed from handle, shielding the needle tip to help protect clinicians from needlestick injuries (NSIs)

Passive needle stabilization

Can stabilize the needle during insertion, helping enable insertion success for patients

Locking catheter wings

Connected to the catheter hub are pushed forward towards the needle tip to advance the catheter into the vein after the guidewire has been fully inserted

Guidewire push off button

Pushes forward once the needle has entered the vessel and flashback is noted

Ergonomic, plastic housing

Promotes simple insertion technique

Silicone plug

Located in the handle restricts blood flow when an extension set is being connected, providing additional protection from blood exposure

Intuitive grip location

Designed to help prevent “hand confusion”

Grips with ridged areas

On the plastic housing can be used by clinicians to hold the device when inserting the needle and advancing the guidewire

Needle tracking-enabled

Supported by real-time imaging to improve insertion success

PowerGlide Pro™ Midline Catheters are built with Cue™ Needle Tracking Technology, providing the ability to use needle tracking when paired with compatible BD ultrasound systems*. The technology provides the path, intersection point and real-time depth of the needle throughout the insertion procedure, helping you to place catheters confidently and efficiently.**

*PowerGlide Pro™ Midline Catheters with Cue™ Needle Tracking Technology are compatible with these BD ultrasound systems:

  • Prevue™ II Peripheral Vascular Access System
  • SiteRite™ 9 Ultrasound System

**Compared to traditional ultrasound techniques

Power injectable

Designed for power injection

PowerGlide Pro™ Midline Catheters allow for the injection of contrast media for CT scans at maximum flow rates:

  • 18 G: 7 mL/sec
  • 20 G: 5 mL/sec
  • 22 G: 2 mL/sec

Caution: When using room temperature (20°C) contrast with a 26.6 cP viscosity, maximum flow rate may not be achieved.
