Product Donation Program

During fiscal year 2008, BD donated over $3.4 million in products used for medical missions, community outreach programs and disaster relief efforts. By partnering with the organizations listed below, BD furthered our corporate purpose of "Helping all people live healthy lives."

As a Company, we are fortunate to provide the world with a wide range of essential tools for human health. We work closely with international nonprofit agencies and organizations to achieve humanitarian goals through in-kind product donations. BD’s product donation program reflects the Company’s diverse portfolio of products and services worldwide. BD regularly and routinely donates its products to several outstanding international relief agencies, in an effort to efficiently and fairly allocate our resources.

Ready Relief Boxes: Medical Aid That is Ready to Go

As part of our Product Donation Program, BD is supporting the Heart to Heart International’s Ready Relief Box program. The program aligns closely with BD’s corporate purpose of "Helping all people live healthy lives," providing international medical teams with the essential medicines, instruments and supplies that treat 400-500 patients per Ready Relief Box.

Heart to Heart is a U.S.-based global humanitarian organization that works to improve health and to respond to the needs of disaster victims worldwide. The organization works with hundreds of medical groups within its global network, providing customized shipments of medical aid to improve health in nearly 60 countries. Heart to Heart specializes in delivering essential medicines and supplies, as well as providing training necessary to increase the level of medical care in the world’s underserved regions.

In 2008, Heart to Heart shipped over 170 boxes to 29 countries. In Myanmar in particular, the Ready Relief Box played a crucial role following the 2008 cyclone when so many NGOs faced insurmountable barriers to providing aid to that country’s people. Because it could be hand carried across the border, the Ready Relief Box was an ideal way to provide medical aid during that difficult time.

What Does a Ready Relief Box Look like?

• Design: Suitcase-like design allows it to be transported internationally with ease
• Overall value: Nearly $15,000
• Offered to medical groups for: 500
• Items included: Analgesics, anti-allergy medications, anti-amebics, antibiotics, gastrointestinal medicines, gauze bandages, exam gloves, topical ointments, vitamins, and a distinctive doctor's bag that includes new frontline diagnostic equipment including a blood-pressure gauge/cuff, otoscope, stethoscope and digital thermometers.
• BD product contributions: ACE® bandages, exam gloves and digital thermometers.
• The result: BD and Heart to Heart are improving the health of more than 500,000 people per year through this innovative program.

BD is a member of PQMD, a nonprofit membership association committed to ensuring the quality of medical product donations globally. PQMD also aims to encourage the donation and delivery of appropriate medicines to people in need in a timely and effective manner.
